Maybe I’m just a party-pooper but I am really starting to think that it’s time FIFA dispensed with the tradition of playing each team’s national anthem at the beginning of the World Cup games. As far as England is concerned, it doesn’t make any sense in any case : the dubiously titled God Save Our Gracious Queen is the national anthem for the United Kingdom rather than for England itself. Having said that, if we will insist on having 4 separate teams for one country we can expect these confusing consequences! I guess it’s just lucky that none of the other three got through to the main tournament.
And today’s performance has been very funny – the match that is currently playing between South Korea and Togo started with the organisers playing the South Korean anthem twice. Only toward the second playing did someone notice the cock-up… there was an almost audible ‘zip’ as the needle was pulled away from the record and some poor German official was charged with finding the right recording for Togo’s anthem. Hasten to add, the players on the Togo side didn’t look too chuffed with the situation, as if they haven’t had enough problems already with their entry into the World Cup competition!!
