Lost Among Brickwork
With voices muffled
Under blankets of deep
Umber gloss,
Captured;
Stilled for a time,
Hunched over with protective,
Teary gesticulation,
Carrying digits and rhymes
Through endless corridors
Into distant halls and unfamiliar
Classrooms, they were
Lost among brickwork
And echoes and patterns
Of implicit magnitude,
Sketches of letters
And the sour, nauseating smell
Of standing milk with
Cold, alloys of water
In shaded, miniature bathrooms.
I was lost among brickwork
That yielded above and below
To hard, varnished wooden floors
Where acquaintances ate heartily
And consumed each other
In make-believe costumes
And self-penned caricatures,
Captured;
Stilled for a time,
Hunched over with protective,
Teary gesticulation
Staring into distant hills
And unfamiliar settlements
In a storybook world
Beyond layers of turquoise, black
And the shades of reddish-brown
In the endless corridors
On unremitting, intriguing
Piping that seemed
Lost among brickwork.
