As a child, I was fascinated by sound and timbre, and so my parents encouraged my interest by providing lessons in classical guitar and keyboard. Then, during my school years, I was lucky enough to have been able to learn to play a few other instruments to a greater or lesser standard : piano, violin, clarinet & orchestral percussion. I was also involved in performances with the school choir and orchestra, including a series of concerts in schools in Germany.
These formative years laid a foundation of solid musical experience that I have been able to build upon as an adult. Over the years I have performed in many different musical guises, including as :
* Rehearsal pianist for a Bradford stage school
* Singer & occasional leader / conductor for Bradford Raised Voices
* Band member for fringe performance of "Fiddler on the Roof" at Edinburgh Festival 1998
* Organist for the Scarborough Church of Christ Scientist
My musical knowledge / understanding were demonstrated in 2001 when I graduated from University of Hull with a First Class Bachelors degree in Music with Creative Music Technology, where I specialised in the study of musicology. Since then, I have spent much of my time offering one-to-one instrumental tuition, tutoring music theory to undergraduates and acting as a peripatetic pianist within Bradford schools.
My personal growth as a musician is also fulfilled with my collaboration with the other members of the rock band I play in : The First Few. Getting together on a weekly basis to work on the songs we've written in our unique style, the band strive to perform as much as possible in venues in and around West Yorkshire. In addition to this, I continue to study the classical piano repertoire and have recently resumed lessons in clarinet after a 12 year break!
I have very eclectic tastes in music but my passions lie in a few distinct areas : I love the music of the French impressionist movement, particularly that of Claude Debussy. Moving away from 'serious' music, I very much admire the songwriting styles of artists such as Jonny Cash, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. Actually, you could catch me listening to really any music that's written and performed well.
