For most instrumental beginners, the student and I would usually select an appropriate course book, working through which acts as the primary structure to lessons. However, tutors-in-print do tend to miss out important exercises required to develop a smooth, fluid finger action so I would also incorporate these into the lesson and occasionally bring along other bits of music repertoire to increase the scope of my pupils' experience - this also encourages them to experiment with other pieces they enjoy listening to.
